The biggest iPhone comes with a super-sized price tag to match
Like its name suggests, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the biggest and best handset that Apple has produced to date. You’ll need to pay a premium to get your hands on this device though, with a price tag that starts at AU$1,849 in Australia.
The phone has the same squared-off sides as the rest of the iPhone 12 family, which means it’s not as comfortable to hold as previous iPhones with rounded edges, such as the iPhone 11.
Still, a big phone with a large screen may be exactly what you’re looking for. The 12 Pro Max boasts a bright OLED display that stretches 6.7‑inches, and the ultra-thin bezels mean you’ll really be making the most of the extra screen real estate.
You’ll also get some incredible shots thanks to the 12 Pro Max’s camera setup. On the back you’ll find three 12MP cameras: a wide, an ultra-wide and a telephoto lens. That’s exactly what’s available on the 12 Pro, but the 12 Pro Max benefits from a slightly better aperture, allowing it to let in more light, and marginally more zoom range.
Like the 12 Pro, the 12 Pro Max is also boasting a LiDAR sensor, which is relatively new technology for a smartphone. It’ll help get you better shots when taking pictures at night, as it’s good at picking up faces and preserving detail.
But aside from sheer size, what sets the iPhone 12 Pro Max a step above the rest? Well, it has the best battery life among the iPhone 12 family, so you shouldn’t need to charge it as often as the rest of the range.
That’s because its larger size means it can squeeze in a bigger battery, so even with battery-draining usage, such as listening to Spotify, watching YouTube and using 5G connectivity, it should get you through the day and then some.
Speaking of which, the 12 series is the first from Apple to feature 5G connectivity. It’s availability in Australia is mostly concentrated to the capital cities at the moment, and Telstra, Optus and Vodafone all have growing 5G networks – though Vodafone’s is still in the early stages of rolling out.
Storage options are available in either 128GB, 256GB or a whopping 512GB, with classy colour choices in gold, silver, graphite and dark blue.
While the 12 Pro Max is the most expensive iPhone in the range, it could be just the right fit if you want a large screen and excellent battery life. The base model is just AU$150 more than the 12 Pro, so consider moving up if you can stretch your budget.
Score: 4.5/5
Verdict: The iPhone 12 Pro Max shares very similar DNA to the iPhone 12 Pro, and the differences in camera performance between the two are fairly minor. But, if you want the best battery life and the biggest screen, this is the iPhone for you.
